History of Artefact |
If a footballer plays internationally they are presented with a cap. This was Matt Reilly’s cap (a PFC player) – it was given to him when he played as goalkeeper for Ireland in 1902. He was Portsmouth’s first international player, he was also the first player to be signed as a professional. PFC was formed in 1898. This was his second cap. |
Historian | Richard Owen / John Stedman |
Previous Owners | Matt Reilly and his descendants |
Special Memories | The Reilly’s were very pleasant and generous people. There’s a photograph of him on his wedding day (1900) on loan to PFC from the museum also, which is normally displayed with the cap - these are included in an exhibition to celebrate the club's 110th anniversary. |
